Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia is a general term usually denotes a group of unclear symptoms in the digestive tract. Indigestion is often described as a feeling of bloating, fullness, heartburn, nausea, or gassy discomfort in the abdomen or chest. These symptoms of indigestion can develop during the meals or subsequent to taking the meals.
Stress and Indigestion
When assessing digestive disturbances, it is very important to assess your stress level. During the stress response, the sympathetic arm of the autonomic nervous system dominates over the parasympathetic. The autonomic nervous system controls all unconscious nervous activity. While the sympathetic nervous system kindles the fight-or-flight response, it is the parasympathetic nervous system that is in charge for the processes of digestion repair, restoration, and rejuvenation. If an individual is in a stressed state, the body is designed to shunt blood and energy away from the digestive tract in favor of the skeletal muscles and brain. Regularly achieving a relaxed state (learning to calm the mind and body) is very important in mitigate stress and improving digestion.

Holistic Perspective
According to our ancient science the Agni which governs and regulates the digestion becomes less active due to the vitiatation caused by the increased vata, or pitta or kapha. Indigestion is caused as the result and a symptom varies according to the prakriti type. The fundamental factors disturbing the digestive fire or Agni can arise out of poor dietary habits, faulty life style and psychological factors.
